The Upgrade Blueprint

When does BA release reward seats for my dates?

British Airways opens Avios reward seats 355 days before each flight. Outbound and return open on different days. Put in your dates and get both release dates, plus a calendar file so you are searching when the seats appear, not a week after they have gone.

Popular family routes in school holidays can sell their Club World reward seats within hours of release. The date matters more than any trick.

What to do on the day

  1. Be logged in to ba.com from about 23:55 UK time the night before. Seats usually appear shortly after midnight, occasionally a little later.
  2. Search the outbound as a one-way. Do not wait for the return to exist; it is released on its own date.
  3. If you hold a companion voucher, the tick box appears on the passenger page. Apply it to the highest-value tickets.
  4. Book the return as a second one-way on its release date, then ask BA to link the two bookings.
  5. If nothing shows, check the same date via Iberia, Qatar Airways or Aer Lingus, which sometimes see different inventory on the same BA flight and can price it lower.

How far ahead does British Airways release Avios seats?

355 days before the departure date of each individual flight. A return trip therefore has two release dates.

What time do the seats appear?

Usually shortly after midnight UK time on the release day. It is not an exact science and BA does not publish a time, so be logged in before midnight and refresh.

Does every flight get reward seats on day one?

Most long-haul flights get a small allocation in each cabin at release. More can be added later, and seats come back when other people cancel, so an alert on the route is worth setting even if you miss the day.

Do the other Avios programmes follow the same rule?

They see the same BA flights, so the same release date applies when booking BA metal through Iberia Plus, Qatar Privilege Club or Aer Lingus AerClub. Their own airlines' flights follow their own calendars.

Knowing the date is half of it. Knowing what to book is the other half. The Upgrade Blueprint Playbook covers every UK card worth holding, the companion voucher explained properly, and real redemptions with the numbers I actually paid.
